The Council for Economic Education has released 'Gen i Revolution,' a free online personal finance game sponsored by FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority).
Middle and high school teachers can register their classes at http://www.genirevolution.org/join.php.
During the game, students undertake 15 missions to beat back the insidious "Murktide" infestation. The "Murktide," a confusion about basic personal finance principles, is spreading across the population, and middle and high school students are the last line of defense against a lifetime of poor financial decisions.
Designed to teach important personal finance and investing concepts, the missions are correlated to two Council for Economic Education programs, 'Learning, Earning and Investing' and 'Your Credit Counts.'

2010 NEH Summer Institute: The Lost World of Early America with John Demos
This summer, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Summer Seminars will offer The Lost World of Early America, a two-week NEH Summer Institute led by historian John Demos at Yale University. Teachers invited to participate will travel back to the Colonial Era in order to explore the lives of early Americans—and, in turn, gain a richer understanding of the changes that resulted from both the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution in the American experience.
All K-12 history, social studies, and English teachers, including those who attended a Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminar in 2009, are now eligible to apply to this NEH Summer Institute. For further details, visit:

About John Demos
John Demos is the Samuel Knight Professor of History at Yale University, where he has specialized in teaching early American history since 1986. His most recent work, The Enemy Within: 2,000 Years of Witch-Hunting in the Western World (Viking, 2008), culminates a half-century of intense study of witch-hunting incidents in Europe and America.

The Bill of Rights Institute Announces Founders Fellowship Program
for New Teachers from Across the Country
The Bill of Rights Institute is pleased to invite you to apply for our brand new Founders Fellowship Program! This new program is open to 20 early-career American History and Civics teachers. Selected Fellows will participate in a year-long educational program to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the American Founding.
The Founders Fellows will convene in Washington, D.C. on July 6, 2010 for an all- expenses paid multi-day educational program. During the program, Founders Fellows will participate in lectures, discussions, and scholar-led visits to historic sites including Mount Vernon, the National Archives, Gunston Hall, Monticello, and Montpelier.
In order to prepare for the program, Fellows will complete readings about our Founding. Among the questions they will explore will be: How did the Founders define liberty? And Why did the Founders create a republic and not a democracy?. Upon completion of the Washington program, each Fellow will submit a lesson plan drawing upon the readings, discussions, and topics from the program. The Fellowship will continue during the following academic year, when Fellows will reconvene online for periodic discussions about reading and pedagogical issues.
The Founders Fellowship Program will select promising social studies teachers, grades 7-12, who have been teaching for five years or fewer. Early career teachers from all around the country are encouraged to apply. Twenty top teachers, representing 20 states will be selected to participate.
Fellows will be selected based upon their knowledge of the Founding era, their talent in the classroom, and dedication to educating their students.

Bill of Rights Institute
The Bill of Rights Institute is launching their new First 5 in My Life Video Contest! Students in grades 7 through 12 are asked to create a 2-minute video in the following categories: First Amendment in Your Community or First Amendment in the United States. Students also need to submit written responses to 3-4 questions in the form of “Director’s Notes.” Made possible through generous support from Channel One, Ethics and Excellence in Journalism and Larry Smead, First 5 in My Life offers $10,000 in cash prizes.

NEW PRE CONFERENCE WORKSHOP AT WCSS
Our Watery World: Project WET Social Studies Educator Workshop. Marriott West Hotel, Madison, WI. March 12, noon to 4pm. Is it possible to pull people and place apart? At their roots, environmental issues are social issues and the other way around. Come learn how to bring the many concerns surrounding water into social studies lesson plans using Project WET. Project WET is an interdisciplinary K-12 conservation and environmental education program with over 90 activities focused on water. In this four hour workshop, participants will be introduced to the Project WET activity guide, engage in at least five activities, and have time to share ideas on how to use Project WET in their classrooms. Participants will leave the workshop with their own Project WET guides and a collection of educational resources from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources that complement Project WET activities. No matter what specific subject or grade you teach, this teacher-tested program will enhance and diversify your teaching while meeting academic standards and helping students understand their inseparable ties to our water-y world. WCSS & IEC ANNOUNCE CRAIG KIELBURGER PRESENTATION OPEN TO PUBLIC!!
Craig Kielburger is the co-founder of Free The Children, a unique international development and youth empowerment non-profit organization. Since its founding in 1995, Free The Children has become the world’s leading youth-driven charity, inspiring an entire generation to stand up and have their voices heard.
With the involvement of more than a thousand Youth in Action groups, Free The Children has built more than 500 schools throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America, providing daily education to more than 50,000 children. Through its Adopt a Village development model, it has established more than 23,500 alternative income projects to assist women and their families in achieving sustainable incomes. The organization has also formed successful partnerships with leading school boards across North America and Oprah’s Angel Network.
Craig is also the co-founder of Me to We, a social enterprise that encourages ethical living and global citizenship through socially responsible products and choices, while also helping Free The Children achieve financial sustainability. Me to We includes international volunteer travel programs, a publishing house, a music label, leadership workshops, a speakers’ bureau and a clothing line.
Craig has been awarded many national and international awards for his work, including The Roosevelt Freedom Medal, The World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child (also known as the Children’s Nobel Prize) and he is one of the youngest recipients of the Order of Canada. Craig’s work has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN, 60 Minutes and The Today Show, and in People, Time and The Economist.
Kielburger will be the keynote speaker on Monday, March 15th at the Great Lakes Social Studies Conference in Middleton. His presentation will begin at 12:45. The **Zinn Education Project** is a website designed to help teachers use A People's History of the United States in their classrooms. The **Zinn Education Project** provides complete lesson plans for use in elementary school, middle school, and high school settings. In some cases the lesson plans include document excerpts and references to A People's History of the United States. You can search for lesson plans by time period, theme, or by student reading levels.

**American Rhetoric - Famous Speeches from Politics and Entertainment** AMAZING CIVIC EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY__
The Institute is entitled Political and Constitutional Theory for Citizens: The National Academy for Civics and Government. It will take place July 1031, 2010, and all expenses for per diem and books are covered by the grant. Because of supplemental funding provided by a grant from the Center for Civic Education, the airfares for those participants staying on the Loyola Marymount University campus will also be covered, which will possibly allow us to provide those participants a modest stipend.
The Institute has been an extraordinary success in years past, and we're looking forward to another great experience in 2010. Previous participants have discovered that Will Harris, the academic director for the National Academy for the past ten years, is a scholar and leader who knows how to conduct an intellectually rigorous immersion into political and constitutional theory and make it enjoyable. We're confident that next summer's participants will experience the same sense of "intellectual stretching" and camaraderie. That the group will include a mix of up to 5 international civic educators as well as Americans who teach elementary and secondary students should make it all the more professionally rewarding.

Financial Literacy: TEACH IT! from ECB provides educators with resources and professional development to effectively teach financial literacy. The Web site features twenty-one lessons taped in Wisconsin’s elementary, middle and high school classrooms, as well as interviews with the teachers in the videos. There are vetted lesson plans, a parent resource page and a teacher forum. Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy serve as the foundation for this multi-media resource.
